kissing buttons ~ #menswear #wiwt #suits

December 19th, 2012
Hi! I've recently completed uni and will start being a suit next year. I'm a complete novice when it comes to wearing suits but what confuses me even more are shoes. Are there certain shoes that you recommend or any advice on how to choose the right pair of shoes to go with your suit?

Congrats on finishing Uni, it’s a big milestone so I hope you enjoyed it.

Shoes can be confusing. You’ve probably read about the rules like ‘no brown in town’ or that brogues are a more casual shoe, so should be worn as such. It’s up to you and what your office environment dictates to determine what’s acceptable and then decide what you feel comfortable wearing. This seems like obvious advice, but try them on first because dress shoe sizing can be tricky and you don’t want to waste money on exchanges. As for styles, familiarise yourself with oxford lacing (bal in the US) and derby lacing. Oxford is more formal, and better suited for the office. Keep it simple, and stick to the classic English shoemakers to start. Buy a couple of pairs and rotate them.

Hope this helps.

The sartorial splendour that is white shoes with a black suit.

May God have mercy on our souls.
