If you’re not intending on purchasing Horween CXL or cordovan, then I’d probably steer clear of Alden boots, but that’s more a matter of personal preference. The calfskin boots aren’t the most elegant things going at that price point.
As for sizing, you need to get yourself measured on a Brannock Device. You could do this at most sports stores, it’s the big silver foot measuring device you’ve likely encountered before. If you want a better level of service, my friend Christian at Herringbone on Collins St will be able to help you out for sure and measure you up properly.
Once measured, just be mindful that certain Alden lasts fit differently and it’s a pain to send stuff back to the States. No-one here stocks Alden. My suggestion: book a ticket to Empire State, buy shoes and spend some time in the big apple.
